As well as being a great place to relax, explore, tuck into hearty pasta dishes and enjoy the pleasant climate, this charming island also appeals to those who enjoy various exciting water sports, such as windsurfing, sailing and kite surfing.

Water sports enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy kite surfing, visit Sardinia in droves, due to fantastic wind and water conditions, as well as beautiful scenery and a selection of great kite surfing schools. For those of you who aren’t too familiar with this particular sport, it’s actually quite a straightforward concept: a surfboard which is dragged along by a kite. Due to help from the waves and the wind, it’s easier than you may think to make jumps and do different manoeuvres, especially when the water is calm.

Sardinia has the pleasure of being lashed by all kinds of winds, all around its coastline. This creates a good number of kite surfing spots! In the North East of the island, there is the famous Porto Pollo, which is home to a large crescent shaped bay with white sand and beautiful clear waters. There are two parts to this bay, which are separated by a sandy peninsula. The flat waters here make it the perfect place for learning. The Chicco del Croce Kite Academy (chiccodelcroce.it) are based there, and they run basic and advanced courses, private lessons and even children’s courses.

On the South West coast you’ll find Il Poetto, Cagliari’s 7km beach, Chia, Fontanamare and Capo Mannù, the latter of which is home to substantial waves and is often used by pros only. The South West is also home to the popular Porto Botte, where you will find unspoilt beaches and a sea full of all sorts of different fish species. Kite Surf Sardinia (kitesurfsardinia.it) is a school with 6 years of experience and offers lessons at various levels, as well as kite surfing excursions. They use Ponte Botte for the slightly more experienced surfer and nearby Punta Trettu, with its shallow lagoon and flat water as a safe learning location for beginners.

So for those of you who’ve never tried kite surfing, why not give it go? Or if you’re a regular kite surfer, then try Sardinia for size. The best times to visit are Spring and Autumn; wind conditions are great during these seasons and besides, summer can get very hot and very crowded. The water will be fairly warm, so some choose not to wear a wetsuit, but make sure you wear whatever is comfortable for you. Happy kite surfing!

We have a lovely selection of villas in Sardinia, so why not choose this wonderful, picturesque location for your next Italian holiday?

The stunning island of Sardinia, located in the western part of the Mediterranean sea, is home to gorgeous white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters that wouldn’t look out of place in the Caribbean.
