Bordered by Tuscany and Lazio, this central region of Italy doesn’t have a coastline, but it is home to the Tiber River, the Apennines and many historical towns and villages, including the World Heritage Site of Assisi. Another town that is definitely worth a visit however, is Spoleto; located in a large valley and surrounded by stunning mountains, this particular location has a long and interesting history.

The town of Spoleto is said to have been inhabited since prehistoric times, and in 241 BC became a Roman settlement, flourishing under the Roman Empire. It remained an important town during medieval times and later, under the rule of Napoleon in 1809, became the capital of the temporary French department Trasiméne. It’s no surprise therefore, that the walled hillside town of Spoleto, which is one of the largest towns in southern Umbria, is home to a great many monuments and historical sights.

One of the most famous sights is the Ponte delle Torri, or ‘Bridge of Towers’.

Complete with ten large arches, this fourteenth century bridge was built over the foundations of a Roman aqueduct. The highest point is around 262 feet above the gorge, so it is the perfect place to enjoy some wonderful views of the surrounding area. Another place for great views is the nearby Rocca Albornoziana fortress; built over a Roman acropolis and home to six towers and a collection of beautiful frescoes.

If you are keen on visiting Roman sites, then Spoleto will be right up your street. Here you can find a Roman theatre, and the much-visited Casa Romana, which is said to have been home to the mother of Emperor Vespasian, who is believed to have been responsible for building the Colosseum. Other noteworthy historical buildings include the Cathedral, or Duomo, which was constructed in the 12th century and has a beautiful Romanesque façade. It also houses a manuscript by St Francis of Assisi.

San Salvatore Church is an important example of early Christian architecture and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And when you’ve spent some time exploring these wonderful sights, why not head to the charming central Piazza del Mercato for a coffee or tasty gelato.
