Portofino and the Cinque Terre

On the coast of North West Italy lies the beautiful region of Liguria.
This area, known to many as the Italian Riviera, is home to some of the most beautiful landscape in the whole of Italy. With a stunning coastline, compact little settlements nestled into the cliffs and colourful stone houses, exploring Liguria is an absolute must.

This particular part of Italy continues to remain largely untouched by corporate development, thus making it even more special, and visiting it gives you a true indication of what it’s really like to live la dolce vita! One of the most popular things to do here is visit the world famous Cinque Terre, which consists of five little settlements built into the rock along the coastline. The villages of the Cinque Terre date back to the middle ages; most of them being built during the 12th century, and because of their geographical location, they are unlike anything else you’ll come across in Italy. The steep, rugged terrain and incredible scenery coupled with the presence of many colourful little buildings makes for a truly inspiring landscape. These villages may not be very easily accessible, but that’s what makes them even more special, and a visit even more worthwhile.
Starting with the furthest South, you will find Riomaggiore, home to a wonderful 13th century castle. Manatola is a small hamlet, with its houses having been built on a rocky spur, and Vernazza is home to quaint houses, narrow streets and fine examples of Ligurian Gothic architecture. Then there is Monterosso al Mare, with its old castle ruins and dominating 17th century monastery and finally Corniglia; the only village of the Cinque Terre which doesn’t have any ‘contact’ with the sea; instead, it is often labelled as the ‘balcony’.

As well as the stunning Cinque Terre, the exclusive seaside village of Portofino is also well worth a visit. Perfect for an afternoon excursion, this popular resort on the Italian Riviera is, and was, a true favourite of the rich and famous. During the warmer months, its half-moon shaped harbour is full of boats and yachts, and as well as a wonderful selection of seafood restaurants and chic cafes and bars, you can also enjoy a spot of retail therapy, as Portofino is home to several designer shops. The gorgeous sea is perfect for swimming, diving and boating, and the surrounding area is great for those who enjoy hiking. Everywhere you turn there is a stunning panorama to marvel at, particularly in the Portofino Regional Park. Make sure you check out the Castello Brown too, which, from its hilltop location, has great views of the harbour, as well as the 12th Century Church of San Giorgio.

We have a lovely selection of villas in Liguria, so why not choose this wonderful, picturesque location for your next Italian holiday?
